Are you thinking about pressure washing your fence? That’s great! Your fence is one of the first things people notice about your home. Having a clean fence not only has an amazing curb appeal, it also prolongs its lifespan. At Harford Powerwashing, a power washing company in Harford County, we’ve had our fair share of clients asking about pressuring washing their fence and if it was a viable option. We always recommend having a clean fence because it comes with so many benefits that it’s almost impossible to not do it. Let’s take a look at how to pressure wash your fence and the process that comes with it.
Inspect your fence
Before you begin spraying down your fence, we highly recommend doing a quick inspection on your fence to be sure that they are secured to the ground and see any signs of damage or loose nails. Pressure washers can pack a small punch and the last thing you want to do is knock down your fence while cleaning it. Make sure your fence is straightened and secured to the ground and replace any damaged fences or rusty nails.
Preparations
Pressure washing your fence isn’t something you can jump into right away. There are some precautions you would need to take before you start. First, you want to clear any loose debris around the fence and make sure they’re not near you so that you don’t slip and fall. Next, close all of the doors and windows to prevent water from coming in and also cover up or remove any nearby plants, electrical cords, outlets, and so on. If you have a tarp, it’ll be a good idea to use it to cover them up. Lastly, you wanna bring your pressure washer to a safe area where you can wash your fence without having to worry about tripping over the hose or getting the washer damaged.
The steps
You’ll need a pressure washer, a detergent, and some basic safety gear, including safety goggles and gloves, in order to pressure wash your fence.
-
- Begin by clearing away any debris or furniture that may be near the fence.
- Mix the detergent according to the manufacturer’s instructions and pour it into the pressure washer’s detergent tank.
- Set the pressure washer to the lowest setting and test it on a small, inconspicuous area of the fence to ensure that the pressure is not too high and causing damage.
- Start at the top of the fence and work your way down, holding the nozzle about 6 inches from the surface of the fence. Make sure to overlap each pass slightly to ensure that all areas of the fence are covered.
- Once you have finished pressure washing the fence, rinse it off with clean water to remove any remaining detergent.
- Allow the fence to dry completely before applying any sealants or stains.
Materials
It’s important to know how to properly tackle your fence cleaning project based on what your fence is made out of. For a vinyl fence, we suggest that you apply a mild cleaning solution and let it sit for about 10 minutes before rinsing it. If you’re using bleach as a cleaning solution, make sure it doesn’t dry out during the 10 minute wait and be sure to pressure wash thoroughly as bleach can degrade the vinyl if left on too long. For those who have a wooden fence, you wanna be careful about your nozzle angle and how long you spray in one area. Excessive force from the pressure washer can cause damage to the wood and paint. You also want to wait a least 24 hours for the wood fence to completely dry before applying the stain. If you do it while wet, not only will the stain not be absorbed properly, it can result in mold and mildew development on your fence.
